John Ledyard Chapter 5

Chapter 5 - The Life and Travels of John Ledyard by Jared Sparks

This week we pick up John’s story at Hawaii, just before Captain Cooks death and it ends with his return to England. There is a huge contrast to their first arrival in Hawaii and their second. I will reserve personal comments on this book until the end so not to shape any opinions. We may even do a live show and online chat for anyone who would like to participate when it is completed.

Note: There were several instances my curiosity peaked in this chapter on the known world and references to the names described. It is my intent to pull some screen shots as reference or to provide links. The David Rumsey Collection which is usual my primary source was down as I was compiling this so I went to my backup the University of Alabama (http://alabamamaps.ua.edu/historicalmaps/index.html) and referenced the map A New Map of the World with the Latest Discoveries, Boston: Thomas & Andrews, 1806; Engraved for Morse's Abridgement of Geography and London: Fisher, Son & Co., 1825.

John Ledyard: Chapter 2 &3

We are reading the 1828 biography of The Life and Travels of John Ledyard. This is the first attempt at a production of this by OHP and it is meant to be a study and as close to a firsthand account of this lost to history legendary traveler. In the Preface and Chapter one we met his family and learned of his college life. Now he has moved on to find family in the old country and set sails with Captain Cook on his last voyage. While I am not a professional reader by any means I hope you are enjoying the story. My thoughts are after 1 more week we will move back to the interviews that have taken us so far and explore more history and stories from across the country. We will finish the book as I can not stand a project left undone, however it will be interspersed though out the year.

Announcing "Embracing History Magazine"

Also, we announced this past Monday that we are going into print! OHP and American Digger Magazine are combining forces and will be producing and publishing a new magazine entitled “Embracing History”! We are excited about the new magazine and it will have a flavor of OHP with topics such as: Travel, Leisure, Research, Preservation, Restoration, Artifacts, Antiques and Antiquing, Flea Markets, Online Finds, Myths, Legends, Book Reviews, Archeology, Genealogy, Metal Detecting, In-depth Articles, Historical Fiction…..If its History we have it. You can see why we can say that Nobody Does History Like We Do! Visit http://www.embracinghistory.com to learn more about the Magazine and find out how you can win an 1840 Cavalry Saber or a Segway tour of Historic Gettysburg Battlefield.

OHP Radio presents John Ledyard - History Podcast

OHP Radio presents John Ledyard - an Audio Book Presentation

He was 10 feet tall, could run faster, walk further, swim deeper, climb higher than any man alive now or has ever been. He sailed the seven seas, explored unknown regions, walked across most of the world and met the famous and native alike. A pre-curser and idol to Lewis and Clark, a native of Connecticut and probably the most fearless explorer of all time - John Ledyard.

In the next couple of weeks we will explore John Ledyard through an 1828 book by Jared Sparks. The book is biographical sketch on John Ledyard drawing from his journals and letters. This is a one and only production of its kind, brought to you by Our History Project Productions

This episode:

The Preface and Chapter One: We learn about John beginnings, his home and family. We also look in to the spirit of knowledge, comedy, and bizarre acts that made this man who he was and where he started. This is a character I have wanted to something on and when I found a copy of the book I could not resist. I am no professional reader by any means, but I wanted to try something new here at OHP a chance for you to learn along with me. What you hear, is as far as I go in any given week. Leaving the week to google the people that surrounds John and to explore his life as I go.
